I spy greatness! Identify tools within you to overcome difficult circumstances.

We’re approaching the last month of the year - a year that for many people has been filled with one mind-blowing event or challenging circumstance after the other. Have you had enough? Do you want to waive your magic wand and bust into the new year with superpowers to overcome anything that may come your way?

What if I told you that you don’t need superpowers? You are equipped with everything you need to make that happen.

When you think of the superheroes we see in movies, they were either born with or discovered their superpower after some kind of major life event or difficult circumstance. Batman lost his family while finding his thirst for justice, Mulan’s chi peaked as she defended China and wrestled with who she was inside, Captain America experienced humility that built his character so he could handle the experiment that led him to his great physical strength, and of course there’s Luke Skywalker and the force that was great within him. In the midst of great difficulty came the recognition of strengths from within that enabled all of these heroes to succeed with their missions.

When you look back at this year, what strengths have you seen within yourself arise in the midst of the difficult circumstances? What qualities, characteristics, and skills can you appreciate about yourself? For example, the resilience you had to recreate your working identity after getting laid off so you could find another job to support your family. Perhaps it was shifting processes or your mindset to try something new when all of a sudden your plan no longer worked as the market changed. Maybe you’ve had to do more with less or find new ways to lead your team. Take a moment to write down the major events that occurred, and what strengths from within helped you to keep going. Reflect on your list, and appreciate yourself for how you worked hard and use your own tools to get to where you are today.

Now ask yourself - How can I use these strengths to shape my future? What do I need to keep doing? What do I need to do more of, and when? Set aside time to create a reminder for yourself to use your strengths toward your work and life targets. Reminders might be a list you can post on your mirror or computer, a vision board, meditation, playlist, etc. Journal your successes in using your strengths, and get excited about your future potential.
